The BIG question is, whether it can do Hybrid-AF or not
In reply to jackdeparte, May 11, 2012

Currently, only Nikon 1 System, with the two CX-format cameras can do this, by means of just 9 rows of embedded PD-AF pixels on the image sensor.

If a new Canon CSC can do hybrid-AF, it will open up a huge lens portfolio.

Otherwise, only capable of contrast detect, will not give their new cameras any competitive advantages at all. They would land in the same pond as Micro Four Thirds, but without paddles.

Furthermore, the sensor hardware from Canon is not up to snuff either, such as revealed by the G1 X autofocus having rather slow performance. Should Canon match the Nikon 1 sensors for Hybrid-AF, they would need to look for better semiconductor processes than they currently have in house.

Another approach for Canon would be to use the Sony SLT techniques (PELLIX).

Without PD-AF or Hybrid-AF, I doubt Canon would launch any CSC cameras.
