Nikon 80-200 f/2.8 Zoom Lens Question...

Question about the 80-200 f/2.8 lens variants… I am a hobbyist, and I do not want to spend $2000+ for the current 70-200 f/2.8 VRII lens. On the older 80-200 f/2.8, how much would you miss VR? If you had to hand-hold the camera/lens most of the time, would many of your pics be blurry? I would use it mainly for taking pics of family, friends, vacations, walks in the neighborhood, etc. I am thinking about getting a used copy on eBay.
