Is there any good guide online for learning how to do this with GIMP? (on a 30 days trial of Photoshop but got no money to actually buy it).

With GIMP, keep in mind that v2.8 just came out (it is available for Windows, but most other operating systems are still on v2.6). If you don't use Windows, check for the new version at http://www.gimp.org/ -- There are substantial improvements from 2.6 to 2.8.

GIMP is a good individual photo editor -- especially considering it is free. There are a lot of tutorials on the GIMP website. A good place to start is:

and for specific tutorials:

Besides a photo editor, it's good to have a photo management program to sort and organize your photos -- so when you come home from a day of shooting, you can quickly sort out the good stuff. Adobe Lightroom is the equivalent program for paid software, but there are lots of free, open source alternatives:

http://www.digikam.org/ is one
http://www.myphotoindex.com/ is another
and the list goes on:
