If you shoot in midday bright light a lot I think its a good idea to fine tune the meter minus one sixth. Yes, I would shoot in raw because ultimately you'll have far more control over your images than with jpgs. All the same, you don't have to avoid jpg's, but just be aware of how the camera is operating. Watch the videos a few times, and all will become clear on the design philosophy Nikon used in producing the D7000.
