My experience with the 17-55 is that it has barrel distortion at the wide end, but that the amount of barrel is less than most other fast midrange Nikon zooms at their wide end. It does require correction if used for architecture and interiors, but for most landscape work should be fine. The lens is very neutral around 24mm, then flips to negligible to minor pincushion distortion for the remainder of the range to 55mm.

I would expect the 17-35 on DX to have similar distortion, since it is known to have very high distortion on FX. Cropped to DX, this distortion should be moderate. I'm surprised that it was reported to be significantly better than the 17-55 for distortion.
