Don't have good 1600 samples since I only started saving CR2's recently, but I think this ISO 800 example already starts to shows what you are talking about.

DPP's noise becomes splotchy, digital, and gross like bad digital compression. LR4's noise (which is present even at low ISO), is always fine-grain and doesn't detract from the image. Also DPP's splotchy noise is not easy to remove with built in DPP NR tools without destroying the rest of the image where as LR4's noise is better to start with and the noise reduction tools are very gradual.

It is known that sensor noise doesn't mix well with deconvolution sharpening either.
