Surprisingly, DPR thinks the K5 is the equal of the D800 in image quality. Yes, a last generation Exmor in APS-c format compared to a new generation Exmor at 36MP in full-frame format is judged to be the equivalent.

No they don't. They could never, ever make such a claim and be taken seriously by any other review site. So we know that the D800 has better build, AF, video, etc. What did DxOMark Sensor tests reveal about the IQ re: D800 vs K-5?

Pentax K-5

Overall Score 82

1162 ISO score
14.1 EVs DR score
23.7 bits Color Depth score

Overall Score 95 (highest ever recorded at DxOMark)

2835 ISO score
14.4 EVs DR score
25.3 bits Color Depth score

Is there some intuition about what image quality means that the reviewer is trying to appeal to? I'm not getting it.

You don't need intuition, just eyes. I've used a D800 for a little over a week and a D7000 for much more (same sensor as K-5) and the D800 IQ is miles ahead of the D7000, and the K-5. The difference in high ISO performance is dramatic, and it doesn't take any psychic intuition to realize that. It not a subtle difference, but a huge one.
