Yo Geoff,

I've always been a fan of the EU and hope Greece stays in it.

However, I was never sure that adopting the Euro was good for them. I just can't see the Greel mentality/psyche...falling into line with northern Europe and alike.

Also, personally...I don't WANT Greece to be like Germany, Holland or the UK either.

Greece has always been a survivor, and it's people are very resilliant. it will get through this difficult period. However, there is a definitel need...for them (as a society) to get rid of the localized corruption and niche-favouritism that plagues most of the southern European regions.

In Greece (just like in Italy, etc)'s not what you know...but WHO you know, that almost completely determines opportunity/success....or not

The one thing that Grreks need right political stability and a definite path..that will see them out of this mess....whether that include staying in the Euro Zone, or simply defaulting and stating from scratch with their own New Drachma currency.

I doubt...IF the austerity package that Germany, etc....will or can work. Athenians have already had 4 years of severe economic downturn...and many people there are being pushed to the brink. it cannot continue indefinately, another 10-20 years of simply out of the question.

Austerity will never produce results...IF the populace has no money to feed/comfort and motivate itself properly...let alone, extra cash to buy good n order to create economic growth, etc.

Unless, they (ie: the new coalition Govt) can re-negociate a new load package with their northern EU members...I feel that it would be best for Greece to default, and start anew.

I think the younger generation in Greece will eventually turn the country around...they will not continue on with the status quo of old.

Here's some more of my comments regarding this topic from another post.

"It is a small gesture, but one that can be very effective - especially in a large crowd. So fart, and if you must, fart often. But always fart without apology. Fart for freedom, fart for liberty, and fart proudly" (Benjamin Franklin 'The Dream' 1751)

nice story Kev, sorry, BUT the Greeks are lazy dont want to pay taxes and deserve the mess they are in. lifes a bitch.
