I would said a nudge to the 70-300MM VR, both are quick. Remeber the 70-300 VR is F4.5-5.6 so it does very well during sunny days - Although some have said that IQ is poor indoors/low light, I found it to work just fine.

I have the 18--70MM (upgrade from 18-55MM VR on my D5100 - still use a backup) and it has very good optics & fast AF.

I can't comment on the 18-105 since i was between these two as far as upgrade goes, but I purchased the 70-300MM VR to cover the other end.

How fast is the 70-300 AF as compared to the 18-70? I have played with the 70-300 previously and if I remember correctly it was adequate (better than the 18-105).
