The camera is a Canon digital IXUS 970 IS..

The Canon website says the camera has spot metering and exposure compensation.

Spot metering will base the exposure on a very small circle in the middle of the viewfinder. The default is average/evaluative metering, which will base exposure on most of the frame, will try to transform the black into dull gray, and over-expose the important stuff. Use spot metering to expose on the important stuff in the center of the frame.

If that does not work, use exposure compensation to adjust the overall brightness of the picture. If the pictures are too bright, reduce exposure (-1 or -2 exposure compensation). If the pictures are too dark, add exposure (+1 or +2 compensation).

As somebody else said, the user manual can be found on the Canon website, and it will tell you how to do these things.
