All handheld.

I've tried using a monopod on occasion (with my E-5 at the zoo) and it can definitely help, but on a hike I'm happiest when I'm least encumbered. It's true that 600mm-equivalent shots require good technique, even with IS, but I've found my keeper rate with this combo is so good that I have to chalk it up to more than good technique on my part! I hope you get the results you're looking for with a little more experimentation.
