Linear only affect PDAF?

I knew that Linear polarizers affected Phase-detect AF, but I wasn't aware that it doesn't affect Contrast-detect AF.
I'd give linear a try - if it truly doesn't affect Contrast-detect AF - if only because that is what photographers used before the shift to PDAF in SLRs -forced- the use of circular polarizers.
