Wide is much more useful than long in Europe where the scale of architecture needs w i d e.
The 35 is good for exhibits in museums where flash is not allowed.

On Dx a 10-24 or 8-16, maybe a 10-20 Sigma would be the main lens and the 35 for street scenes.

For general travel and walking around outside, the kit 18-105 is hard to beat, is sharp, has a useful range and focuses very close.

If you rent something.....no need to....a 24 1.4 would be great on a D7000. I have one and it and my 70-200 2,8 vr1 are my go-to lenses for being out and about. I just got a 24-70 2,8 yesterday to replace my 17-55 2.8 so maybe that one will get used for general shooting. If you are traveling light or using any intra-Europe flights where the carry on limit is very low, stick with low weight and small size.
