new OM-D -- broken?

I just unpacked my new OM-D body and started to read through the printed manual while I waited for the battery to charge.
After about 1 hour I could wait no longer, so the battery went into the camera together with an SDHC card, popped on a Panny 20mm, and turned it on.
It clunks and refuses to do anything. The EVF is blank, the LCD viewer is mostly violet.
I recall some threads here about the gyroscope needing to be powered up while the LCD is face up. I tried that. I get something on the display that looks like the early color TVs of the 1950s when there was no antenna connected...
Is there something I neglected to do? Or did I get a broken camera body?
