It is not only heavy but very non-linear, and as far as I can tell, non-local. It offers many other tools, too, unlike DPP.

There a number of ways push shadows in Lightroom.

PV2010: Fill light, blacks, tone and point curve
PV2012: Shadows, blacks, tone and point curve.

These are the global controls.

In addition there is graduated filter and the brush where you also for PV2012 have a shadows slider. These are local.

Each method have their own behavior.
