Canon 60 f/2.8 vs. 50 f/1.8
May 4, 2012

Looking for anyone that has had these two lenses: Canon 60 mm f/2.8 macro ($429) and the Canon 50 mm f/1.8 ($120).

Is the Canon 60 mm f/2.8 considerably sharper than the 50 f/1.8?

Based on almost every review I've read, the 60 f/2.8 seems ridiculously sharp. For example, the MTF numbers here are really high ( http://www.photozone.de/Reviews/162-canon-ef-s-60mm-f28-usm-macro-test-report--review?start=1 ) vs Canon 50 f/1.8 ( http://www.photozone.de/canon-eos/160-canon-ef-50mm-f18-ii-test-report--review?start=1 ). It almost goes off the chart! SLRgear.com says ".....just one stop down at f/4, it's "prickly sharp," and very sharp indeed all the way out to f/11.". Almost all other sites I've read show similar results and it's hard to find a bad review for this lens (many say it's like an L lens), with vignetting at f/2.8 when focused at infinity the only negative thing noted, and maybe slower autofocus.

I essentially want the sharpest Canon prime lens that I can get for $500 or less, for all around use, including family shots / portraits, outdoor use on trips, maybe a landscape if the focal length works (stopped down to 5.6 or 8), with occasional macro use as a bonus if I can get it. I understand the focal length is a bit long on the 60 f/2.8, but the shorter focal length Canon primes (28 f/1.8, 35 f/2, 24 f/2.8) are not as sharp as the 50 1.8 and 60 2.8. I'll have a shorter focal length lens (18-55 3.5-5.6) for when I need a wider angle. I was planning to go for the Canon 50 f/1.8, but I'll get the 60 f/2.8 if it's sharper. I understand the 50 f/1.8 will be better for low light, but wide open, it's not as sharp as the 60 f/2.8 wide open based on the charts.

Thanks for your time...
