For portraits I use some of the sharpest lenses available for my 'system' and always manual focus. Using softer lenses and/or AF does not allow me to create the photos I like. Even after professional body & lens calibration, AF is not as accurate as MF.

But that's me - Others need softness, flat lighting, low contrast etc. to realise their style, so if that's your bag, go with it. There is no 'right' or 'wrong' to this sort of issue, only individual and subjective taste.
