macro lens uses

I know this is probably a stupid question, but here goes:

Is a macro lens ONLY good for shooting close-up? If I were to buy the Sony SEL30M35 30mm lens, can it be used as a regular walk-around 30mm lens? Or is it only for good for close-ups? (I like the 30mm focal length). TIA.
