People here want to parade "secret knowledge"
In reply to Starshot, May 3, 2012

OP you are right. Many people here think they will show they are smarter than the camera marketing people, and the masses of camera buyers, by "not falling for" the appeal of higher pixel count, which targets the unsophisticated. So it is popular here to display a disdain for higher pixel count and to falsely (often) attribute negative effects to it in a kind of "secret handshake" intended to show that the poster is part of a DPR cognoscenti. I find it a tiresome display.

Great Bustard's post is pretty much on the mark technically and balanced in this respect. Generally speaking more pixels are a good thing to some degree.

When a post is really straining to establish itself as owning contrary knowledge it will go on to claim that, not only are more pixels worse, but that the camera manufacturers generally formerly made better cameras than they do today. The implication is that the need to appeal to the unsophisticated buyer has caused actual deterioration. This is DPR cult thinking at its worst. Of course there are plenty of people posting here who don't go for this nonsense, but your observation is on point for a subset.
