Lens choices
In reply to vinny, May 3, 2012

Thanks to my research, I've got over 100 lenses, and I deliberately mix-up what I carry with me.

For NEX, I nearly always carry the 18-55mm kit zoom with me, although it's a small fraction of all stills I take -- higher fraction for video. In addition, my typical leanings for different situations are:

  • Arboretum, gardens: macro

  • Nature: ultrawide + macro + mirror; optionally fisheye

  • Sports: mirror; optionally ultrawide, zoom

  • Kids: normal; optionally ultrawide, wide, fisheye

  • Stage performance: zoom; optionally ultrawide

  • Vacation: ultrawide + normal + zoom; optionally macro, fisheye, mirror

  • Portraits and bokeh: normal or portrait

  • Landscape: ultrawide; optionally zoom, fisheye, wide

  • Street: ultrawide; optionally zoom

  • Zoo: zoom; optionally normal (for indoor exhibits)

  • Available (low) light: normal

  • Product photography: macro + tele

  • Anaglyph 3D with filter as per http://www.instructables.com/id/Use-Your-Camera-To-Capture-3D-Anaglyphs/ : normal; optionally tele, portrait

Typical category choices:

  • Fisheye: Spiratone 12mm (it's just so tiny! Samyang 8mm would be much better IQ), Raynox 185-degree converter (huge and heavy, but on kit zoom can do both circular and rectangular), Spiratone Bird's Eye (on Takumar 35mm f/3.5)

  • Ultrawide: Sigma 10-20mm (might switch to Sigma 8-16mm)

  • Wide: Rokkor 28mm f/2.5, Takumar 35mm f/2, Vivitar 24mm f/2 ...

  • Normal: any of Mamiya/Sekor 55mm f/1.4, Canon FL 55mm f/1.2, MC Rokkor 50mm f/1.4, Takumar 50mm f/1.4, ...

  • Macro: MC Rokkor 50mm f/3.5, SMC Takumar 100mm f/4, Vivitar 100mm f/3.5, or Vivitar 135mm f/2.8 on a bellows

  • Portrait: Samyang 85mm f/1.4, Jupiter 9

  • Tele: usually a 135mm; could be any lens from 135mm to 500mm

  • Mirror: Spiratone 300mm f/5.6 mirror, Opteka 500mm f/6.3 ...

  • Zoom: any of my XX-XXXmm zooms (Vivitar Series 1, Beercan, etc.)

I often carry two camera bodies. If one's a NEX and the other an SLT, I favor A-mount and M42 lenses because they can work on either body.

Well, that was probably too much information.

Oh, come to think of it, here's some more... my list of lenses with pointers to reviews:
