Anyone watching the stock market...... and if so are you into trading & technical analysis?

What is your take on this market? We have been on a roar this year with the mixed exception of late March through mid-April.

WE (both the Mrs & I) are constantly watching the markets...altho, in reality we don't care too much about the sudden/quick jumps up & down etc.

Our investment threshold "goal" return has always been to be at the 6% level or above (yearly)....and that we have maintained for the past 20+ years.

Even in the 2008 (BAD) slump era...when the markets went into negative territory for a while...it quickly rebounded with +9% gains...by mid 2009, etc.

I've always considered anything above the 12% mark...to be entering the "unecessary risk" factor zone......altho, some years we have made above that.

Canadian gas/resource funds are performing rather well lately with returns in the 20% range.

I am an oil & gas investment fan, and have invested in some of your Canadian trust in the past. If you are an income investor, which it sounds like you are primarily w some capital appreciation, take a look at gasline MLP's like tickers EPD, ETP, MMP, and related companies. Because these are pipeline companies, they make their money by transporting natural gas and charging a passage fee for the transportation of the nat gas. A toll road business model if you will. Not so sensitive to oil prices either (compaired to an Exon, etc.) The pay great tax advantaged dividends (6-7% if you buy them right) and they have growth potential as well. It will make your taxes complicated, but you end up paying LESS than the standard 15& dividend tax rate the way they are structured. Similar to REIT's. They are kinda pricy now, but on a pullback they make good long term investments.

Personally, I prefer commercial REIT portfolio's myself.

Thanks. I'll check it out Kev. I have been into REIT's as well, but out for a few years. May be time to take another look. Do you prefer commercial RE or residential/apartment type REIT properties?

Nevermind - duh. You referenced commercial. I might, however, feel safer in residential until the economy takes hold. May be another matter outside the US?
