Hi,

I had two D40s, traded one for a D5100 last month. It seems that a key factor is the budget so those suggesting a D7000 at twice the budget should reflect. I got £80 for a mint D40 body as a trade in, but you might get more on ebay. I used to use an old manual 50mm lens, again traded it for a new 35/f1.8 DX AFS. I think at £500 you will be challenged with a new D5100 plus kit lens and a 35 even with trades. But the D5100 is a fantastic camera which equals and sometimes exceeds the image quality of my D300s so worth pursuing.

An alternative, as suggested, is a used D90, it too has excellent image quality and can auto focus non-AFS lenses.

Hope that helps.
