Also, be aware that using a dslr or a large sensored camera may not be the best way to go for video. It's also not great for macro photography, unless you both buy a macro lens and know what you're doing.

Video on a dslr is tough because -

1. A dslr with a large sensor has a very narrow depth of field - you get part of the product in focus while another part of the product is out of focus. So imagine you're holding the product in front of the camera and move it just a bit - now it's out of focus. Video from a compact camera with a smaller sensor has a much larger depth of field (though when you're close it's still a little narrow).

2. Most dslr's don't autofocus at all, or very well. I think the gh2 is one of the better ones, don't know about the NEX

3. The prime or wide angle lenses you need to shoot up close don't have image stabilization

To be fair...I'm not sure if there are any compact with an external mic jack...
