Question on depth of field
May 2, 2012

I have a basic question about achieving deep depth of field (deep, sharp detail on an object) with various mm lenses. I may post this too in the Canon lens forum, where I’ve been posting most of my Canon flower shots, but this is so basic it applies to any camera/lens so I thought I’d ask my Sigma friends first.

Alf’s exchange with Steven K about diffraction and apertures made me think about this last night, as I’ve been shooting with smaller and smaller apertures to achieve depth of field. (see recent flowers on flickr link)

Steven's answer http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/read.asp?forum=1027&message=41378524 to Alf's post above it.

Let’s say I’m photographing a rhododendron up close, fill the frame.

Will I have greater depth of field with, say the 50mmEX at f/8 OR with a tele-lens, say a 70-200mm at 200mm at f/8? Again, fill the frame with the subject, trying to achieve sharpness throughout.

I’ve been trying to get close and closer with a 50mm and f/8 to f/13, but is the solution getting FARTHER away and using a more tele- lens at f/8 or even larger aperture f/5.6??

type of shots I'm writing about
this is at f/11

this is at f/9

instead of doing that, ie close up with 50mm, should I literally back up with the 70-200mm, even with the 1.4x extender to 280mm or another combo I can do with prime, 135mm+2x extender to 270mm?
Best regards, Sandy
