If it were me, I'd put the 28-300mm on your d700, and buy/rent a 300mm prime on a second (dx) body for birds. Add the 50mm prime for low light and possibly a macro lens and you're all set.

We'll be going to the Galapagos Islands in June. Mostly it will be day trips to the islands while cruising on a boat. We'll also be spending a day at the Otavalo Market before the cruise. I use a D700 and have a number of lenses available: 16-35, 24-120, 70-200 + 2.0 teleconverter, 28-300, 70-300, 50/1.8. I am limited by space and weight restrictions and want to make sure that I take the lenses that will get the best shots of wildlife from the boat and on the island. Has anyone been there who can can share their experiences?
