vertical grip for 5D MkIII

I have never used a vertical grip before. I have also not used a 1 series camera. In what ways does the vertical grip improve one's photography? In particular, how does it affect travel/family photography? I noticed that 70-80% of my photos have landscape orientation. Perhaps this is because I don't use the vertical grip? I'm wondering if vertical grip is worth the added weight and bulk.
