I do not think you will want to use Auto Gradation mode for all your images. What it does is basically underexpose the image and then selectively push the shadows back up, thus increasing shadow noise in order to save the highlights from overexposing. It will not always look better and it will always be more noisy.

I was going to say exactly this - it's a form of in-camera HDR and does degrade more images than it helps.
