What's your experience with camera clubs / meet ups?

Hi all!

I'm just wondering if you could share your experiences with camera clubs and/or organised photography meet up groups.

There's a camera club near me but from what I can see, it seems quite serious with competitions and lectures etc. Not that I mind the competitions and god knows I could use a lecture :), but I just don't really want to go somewhere stuffy and serious.

There's a joining fee but I don't really want to pay until I can see what goes on. There may be a 'try before you buy' option but I'm still waiting to hear back on whether I can just come along one night and see what happens.

Anyway, I just thought I'd see if any of you had any experience with a formalised camera club - good, bad or indifferent.
