It seems that the upgrade is the sensor pattern.
All previous compacts used a Bayer RGBG pattern, whereas the WX50 and WX70 use an RGBL pattern.
The extra luminance information is used to more selectively perform noise-reduction 2D-cleaning only in dark areas, so as to preserve detail in bright areas.
