Interestingly, noise is visible in the shadow areas even without any PP. More visible when you try to lift shadows.

Am I seeing Horizontal banding too?

So, yes, shadow lifting is a tricky business irrespective of the camera you use. All cameras need to improve in this regard. Till we get a perfect camera the best we can do is to use the right technique, so that no or minimal shadow lifting is needed.

I am sure you will enjoy your D800. Its a fabulous camera.
