Not that it's directly comparable to cost, but the 24mm has two ED elements. The 28mm has none. It is nice to see the 28mm get the nano-coat, but from the samples of the 28mm I've seen it just does not have the unique look in color and contrast the 24mm gives. It is going to be a decent quality, good value, fast semi-wide lens.

True but the new 28f1.8 has something that the 24mm doesn't. Super Integrated Coating. The SIC is designed to enhance the performance of its optical lens elements, with multilayer lens coating that helps reduce ghost and flare. Nikon Super Integrated Coating achieves a number of objectives, including minimized reflection in the wider wavelength range and superior color balance and reproduction.

It's kind of a trade off for ED as most Nikon lenses either have one or the other. The 85f1.8G has SIC and not ED and so does the 85f1.4G. Many good Nikon lenses have SIC that do just fine without ED.
