I think I may have confused the issue. The red channel blow out here is not the intrinsic problem with Nikon DSLRs. In this case the lighting director was illuminating the stage with red floods on stage left. That's why you see lots of red rime light on the dancers legs etc. Since I was shooting NEF I was able to run the eye dropper color balance in ACR. The flag in the background of many of the pictures was gray so the correction was easy. But the lighting director didn't like his red lights being removed so I added some back in with the color temp slider. This allowed my to make jpegs without blown red channel.
