Yes I used to use some very similar diffusers. The simplest version worked quite well, it was just a piece of copier paper fold in half and held on by an elastic band. As you say at times it can give beautiful lighting, but at higher magnifications the lighting can be a bit oblique sometimes. Although I found I could sometimes get around that by holding a piece of white paper under the end of the lens, and which protruded a bit.
