Yep, you really need to take this into consideration. The road to Morraine Lake won't even be open yet (if its anything like last year). That said, there is still tons of fun stuff to shoot. I went in April of last year. Definitely bring something wide, and for the animals the 70-200mm would really, really, be worth your while!
In terms of feel, Banff and Jasper are quite different. Jasper, as a tourist destination, feels a lot more grassroots. It still has busloads of out of place tourists, but Jasper feels more small-town and down to earth. Banff, in all of its beauty, feels quite 'fake' and has a lot of city people taking their first excursion into the 'wilderness'. Around Banff the beautiful spots are placed almost perfectly along the highway. In Jasper you need to put a little bit more work into getting to shooting locations. They are both great places though, a photographers paradise.
