The camera you are talking about is often called the digital FM2, after Nikon's 35mm film hiking camera - simple, strongly built, used power only for metering so you could take pictures with no batteries: everything that is essential, nothing that is not.

Nikon executives are reported to have said they are not going to make one ... Personally, I think Nikon is right, because although a lot of people - me included - say they want a "digital FM2" no two people can agree on what is "essential" ..

Yes, but I suppose you could say that about many types of features in many cameras...does everyone want a tilting screen? an EVF? a touchscreen interface? etc.

Still, every year these companies put out more and more models that fill different niches.

I'm just saying that it looks to me that there's a pretty good niche for a pocket-able large sensor rugged compact. If Pentax put out something like the Q, why shouldn't they make (now that Ricoh has them) a rugged version of the GRD, with a larger sensor?

The OM-D is still too large, and too stylish to be a backpacker's tool.

The K-5 is also too big, and too expensive if you're going to want pancake lenses.
