Don't hesitate to buy the 24-120. I've switched from the 24-70 to the 24-120 and I don't regret it what so ever. Now with my new D800, the 24-120 has proven to be as sharp as my Nikon 70-200 VRII. The 24-120 is an excellent lens and amazingly sharp. Here's a sample I shot at iso 450. You can only imagine how this image would look, if it would have been shot at iso 100. Go ahead and buy yourself the 24-120. You won't regret it.
