Macro photography with a long lens

While true macro photography involves mognifications approaching 1:1, if you are interested in a lesser ratios such as 1:2 -- 1:3 -- 1:4 etc. --- that is photographing a flower, a bee, or olther insect or object where true macro is not necessary nor needed.
So my question is instead of a macro lens can you get really great results with a longer lens such as 300mm, 400mm, 500mm, etc. ??? What lens would you use and could you show an example of your photo.
