How do you change exposure AFTER the focus has locked?

Most of the time I prefer to lock exposure before setting focus (because usually, in waiting the right moment to shoot, the light conditions are more stable than the optimal focus point).

If you want to lock focus before exposure, there are two methods:

  • in AF mode, set the AEL/AFL button to AFL only. Then half-press the shutter to acquire focus, lock it with AFL; recompose to get the correct exposure, lock it by half-pressing the shutter; reframe if needed, and shoot. This is a bit awkward

  • use MF mode. Then the AFL button both acquires focus and lock it. Then you can lock exposure with a shutter half-press, and shoot
