The 14-42 II R is an excellent lens, and comes in silver or black...

…I got it in silver with my E-PL3. I have a notion that the original Panny 14-45 is a touch sharper -- certainly it was significantlhy better than the original Oly 14-42 -- but the results I'm getting with the 14-42 II R are very nice indeed.

I wouldn’t touch the original Oly 14-42. The II version was a very much needed upgrade.

I believe the "R" designation is a remounting, not a new lens formulation. Maybe it’s better for movie. Certainly it takes the accessory wide and close-up lenses, the WCON-P01 0.7x and MCON-P01 2x (I have both), which bayonet mount on the front and extend the lens's capabilities very usefully. Can the plain II take these? I think so; check for the front bayonet mount for these and for a lens hood.

If you check on the used market, you might find the 14-42 II and II R are available very cheaply.

Cheers, geoff
