I've owned three superzooms and loved them. I plan on buying another one within a few months, possibly the SX40. The two cameras would meet my needs 98% of the time.

I have a DSLR but rarely use it. I only keep it for special occasions.

My main camera right now is the s100; it's a fantastic little camera in all lighting conditions, however it can not match the quality at high ISO of a camera with a large sensor. Still, for my needs, it meets or exceeds my exceptions.

The 5X zoom is okay for zooming in on subjects that are not too far away. I like to photograph slow moving wildlife and the s100 rarely cuts it. But sometimes it's good enough if I a critter lets you inch closer before scooting away:

These are large crops using the 5x zoom; post processing in Photoshop:

This will give you an idea of how much I cropped:

Here's a few other images to give you an idea of the versatility of the S100.

This shows the limitation using the 5X zoom. Wish I had a superzoom with me:

I would consider it traveling light with both the s100 and a good superzoom, especially compared to just carrying my DSLR and three lenses.
