Generally its a matter of speed vs. precision with AF, and then Nikon figuring out what type of shots they want to optimize the lens for. Of course there are exceptions to every rule, but the need to get accurate focusing at F1.4 with the correspondingly narrow DOF on some of these new fast primes probably outweighs the number of potential customers who want fast AF for action shots. Slow AF is a critique that Nikon sales can probably survive. An AF lens that can't be focused accurately enough to produce sharp images at F1.4 would hamper sales to a much greater extent I'd guess - after all, people are usually buying F1.4 glass to be able to shoot at or near F1.4.
