The Tamron 60mm actually gives you about the same working distance as does a 90mm at close focusing distances, since the 60mm doesn't extend while close-focusing. I own both the Tamron 90 f/2.8 and the 60mm f/2, and (personally) prefer the latter--on APS-C, it works great as a portrait lens, where the extra f/stop advantage is useful, without, for the reason I just noted, getting into the problems that "standard" 50mm macro lenses (such as my Maxxum 50 f/2.8, which I sold) have with "spacing" and close focusing.

But, as others have said, it depends on what you plan to use the lens for.
