Set noise reduction to -2
In reply to framus, Apr 26, 2012

The default setting of "0" is quite strong, and will result in your high-ISO images getting smeared detail, with an algorithm very similar to that which Fujifilm uses in their point and shoot cameras. (In short, making the details look point-and-shoot-like to my eye.) This isn't a complaint against this camera in specific — I've never seen in-camera noise reduction that looks pretty. If there is any complaint, it's simply that the default is too strong and I'm skeptical of the value of calling it "zero".

Anyway, there's a solution: drop the setting to -2, and while visible noise increases, so does detail, and more crucially, you get less of the worse-than-noise smearing artifacts .
