You're not over thinking it. It's a huge investment. The Nikon d5100 takes wonderful pictures but I wasn't crazy about the video mode. Also, the body was a little small for me.

If I had to say why I returned the 5100 it was because it lacked in body stabilization for some of the more inexpensive Nikon prime lenses (I do a fair amount of video and hand-held is sometimes necessary. IBS is nice to have).

Lack of manual video control on the 5100 is another big one.

The frame rate on the 5100 was a little slow and I like the ability to have 10fps (or 12 at a reduced rate) on the Sony models.

One area the 5100 has the edge is overall still image quality. The 5100 takes beautiful photo's, but with tweaking the RAW files i'm sure the a57 is no slouch. Again, have to wait for the RAW release for Aperture to make a final decision.
