I like your selection of primes. If I were going for a 3-prime suite, the 28, 50, 85 f/1.8 combo would be it. I also like the 105mm f/2.8. It is a great lens that offers sharp imagery and has the flexibility of serving as a macro...it is worth the price.

Going with a prime lens combo promises to produce nice bokeh, low light capability, and distortion free images. Factor in the cost, as you mention, and it is tempting to run with such a set up.

On the other side of the coin, the convenience that fast zooms offer should not be overlooked. If my paychecks were a bit larger (actually, MUCH larger), then of course Nikon's 14-24, 24-70, 70-200 f/2.8 set up would be my first choice.
