Kenya safari in Sept with 5D3 plus 70-300L

I'm going to Africal later in the year, and my plan is to buy a used 500 f4 and a 1.4 teleconverter and then sell them when I get back. I may lose no money at all; at worst I should lose maybe $500 which is a lot of money, but I may never get to go to Africa again...

I'll take the 5dIII and 70-300 and short stuff too

But maybe that's an idea for you. I can't see ever getting much use normally out of a super tele - but it'd sure be great in this one off kind of case!
