Thanks, yes that's what i've been doing.

What is the logic for not passing an adjusted FL from the adapter to the body? The aperture is adjusted.

There is no connection of the data pin from the lens through the 1.7X AFA so there is no way of telling the focal length of the lens. The only way that the 1.7X AFA can work is to short out the data pin of the lens.
