What does "not noticeably" mean?
Apr 24, 2012

Canon says, "In extremely dark environments, if the LCD panel illuminates, the displayed exposure value may change. However, based on the results of extensive testing this change in exposure value will not noticeably affect the captured image."

Does it make sense to say that something can affect exposure but not be noticeable? Of course it does. Innumerable factors fall into this category. I recall back in film days a fantastically accurate flash exposure meter was introduced by Minolta, the Flashmeter III. It was slick and sexy and read out in 1/10 f stops. Whoopee! Immediately photographers started matching their strobes to 1/10 f stop accuracy. That mean not merely adjusting their output (which could not be done in such fine increments) but actually moving them back and forth a foot or less to get that all important "perfect reading" at the subject distance.

Fussbudgeting like this was a hugely annoying waste of time. There was no way in film days that 1/10 f stop change in exposure could possibly be noticed. It would be lost in many other variables.

Using IS (internal stabilization) when shooting at a 4000th is another example. There's no way the added stability imparted by the lens would noticeably improve picture sharpness (assuming normal steady hands).

Likewise for using a tripod when shooting at fast shutter speeds. It simply won't make a difference in sharpness.

I assume that the light leakage "problem" is in this class. On some theoretical level there is an effect; but in practice the effect cannot be detected.
