Nikon AF 24mm F2.8 non-D versus D. Have you used both?

This query is intended for those that have used both the non-D and D version of the Nikon AF 24mm. Did you notice any improvement in image quality, especially sharpness, with the D version?
I picked up a used AF 24mm F2.8 (non-D) versions this weekend for $250 and am a bit disappointed in the sharpness at almost all apertures. Most of the sample images I viewed online were from the D version and they seem a bit to quite a bit sharper than what I am getting. I am using this on a D80.
Overall I like the colors and contrast. It seems to be a good, but not stellar, lens. I also have the Tokina 12-24mm F4 and it is clearly sharper at 24mm than the Nikon. It is always possible as a used lens, something is not quite right here.
I have 2 sample sets on Picasa. The first just some random shots. The second set I took the same scene at F2.8, F5.6 and F11. I have applied a fairly basic adjustment set in Aperture to each.
I am trying to decide if I should keep or return and opt for the D version.
