I can understand they may not want to do it as there may be some limited situation where AF won't work if the area is close to clicking and the Vivid/contrast setting push it to clip and then you can no longer AF. But at least it should be an option that can be enabled or disable, without impacting the JPEG output.

Good question, perhaps this would be an easy enhancement to improve CDAF speed.
